A worker was successfully rescued today in Rome after being trapped under debris from a medieval tower for several hours. The incident occurred during renovation work on the Torre dei Conti near the Colosseum when a section of the tower collapsed, leaving the worker stuck. Emergency responders carefully extracted him using a telescopic aerial ladder and a stretcher, transferring him to an ambulance. The worker’s condition was uncertain, but officials confirmed that he was conscious at the time of the rescue.
The rescue operation faced challenges as additional debris continually covered the worker each time a part of his body was uncovered. Despite initial difficulties accessing the trapped worker through a window on the first floor, rescuers persisted using various techniques, including deploying a drone and utilizing a crane to remove rubble from the building’s second floor.
Mayor Roberto Gualtieri commended the rescue efforts, emphasizing the cautious approach taken to prevent further structural collapses. Apart from the worker who was rescued, three other individuals were safely retrieved following the initial incident, while a 64-year-old worker sustained critical injuries and was hospitalized with a broken nose. Fortunately, no firefighters were harmed during the rescue mission.
The Torre dei Conti, constructed in the 13th century and currently undergoing a £6 million restoration project, suffered damage from historical events, including an earthquake in 1349 and subsequent collapses in the 17th century. The ongoing restoration work, which includes modernizing systems and creating a new museum display, had undergone safety assessments prior to the recent incident.
Italian authorities are investigating potential charges related to the incident, focusing on possible negligence leading to the disaster and injuries. Eyewitnesses, including a German student, observed the dramatic rescue efforts, highlighting the precarious nature of the situation.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed hope for the worker’s recovery, extending sympathies to the affected individual and their family. Meloni commended the law enforcement officers, firefighters, and rescue teams for their bravery and dedication in managing the challenging circumstances during the rescue operation.
