Woman Scammed £400 Selling Phone on Facebook

A woman shared her experience of falling victim to a £400 scam after selling her phone on Facebook Marketplace. The ordeal unfolded as Danielle Pickett, residing in Oldham, handed over her phone to a man on an e-scooter who arrived at her doorstep to collect it. Initially, everything seemed legitimate as the man presented what appeared to be evidence of the funds being transferred to Danielle.

Despite the seeming authenticity, the money did not reflect in Danielle’s account the next day. Concerned, she contacted the buyer, who assured her it was not a scam and promised to rectify the issue promptly. However, as both the buyer and the money failed to reappear, tensions escalated when the buyer started making threats towards Danielle, claiming to know her address and warning of consequences.

Undeterred, Danielle took to social media, sharing CCTV footage of the man and the suspected fake bank transfer confirmation. Subsequently, she received messages from other women stating they had also encountered the same man in the Chadderton area.

In a conversation with the Manchester Evening News, Danielle recounted the initial interaction with the buyer, who had posed as a woman on the platform. Despite displaying what seemed like a genuine payment confirmation, the money never materialized in Danielle’s account. Attempts to resolve the issue with the buyer, named Megan, proved futile as promises to pay in cash or visit again went unfulfilled.

Growing suspicious, Danielle eventually realized she had likely been scammed, leading to confrontations with the buyer and threats being made towards her. Feeling unsafe and violated, Danielle decided to involve the Greater Manchester Police, who are now investigating the matter.

In response to the incident, Facebook’s parent company, Meta, highlighted the implementation of anti-scam features on their platform. They emphasized the importance of verifying accounts engaging in suspicious activities and provided tips for users to avoid falling prey to scams on Marketplace.

As the investigation unfolds, Danielle remains determined to uncover the identity of the scammer, emphasizing the need for caution and vigilance when engaging in online transactions.
