An 18-year-old sex offender from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, has been sentenced to five years and three months in custody for grooming a 14-year-old girl online. Kai Edmundson used social media platforms like Discord, WhatsApp, and Telegram to manipulate the victim, who lived in Derbyshire, into engaging in inappropriate behavior.
Despite never meeting the victim in person, Edmundson coerced her into sending indecent images of children and instructed her to refer to him as a ‘disgusting paedophile.’ Their communication spanned four months, during which Edmundson encouraged the victim’s eating disorder, urged her to self-harm, and even demanded that she carve his name into her skin.
The illicit conversations came to light when Derbyshire Police intervened following a report of inappropriate contact. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of Edmundson by Lancashire Police, who found indecent images of children on his phone. He was charged with multiple offenses, including engaging in sexual communication with a child and possessing indecent images.
Edmundson pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced at Preston Crown Court. In addition to the prison term, he was issued with an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and required to register as a sex offender for life. DS Nicholas Barker of the East Internet Child Exploitation Team emphasized the seriousness of Edmundson’s actions and urged vigilance against online predators.
Barker commended the victim for her bravery throughout the legal process and emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the dangers of online predators. He stressed the police’s commitment to safeguarding children and holding offenders accountable.
