Man Faces Murder Charges After Fatal Hit-and-Run at Liverpool Family Gathering

A Liverpool court heard that a man consumed Jägerbombs before fatally striking his girlfriend’s brother with his car in a suburb. The accused, Stephen Bates, 42, residing on Herondale Road in Mossley Hill, faces murder charges for the incident involving 47-year-old victim Martin O’Donovan outside his sister’s residence on Stonyhurst Road in Woolton during a family gathering for their mother’s 70th birthday.

Bates and O’Donovan met for the first time that day, with Bates reportedly engaging in a drunken altercation and making threats against O’Donovan’s life. Subsequently, Bates allegedly drove his Ford Fiesta directly at O’Donovan, resulting in severe head injuries as he was trapped beneath the vehicle.

During a pre-recorded police interview, Bates’ girlfriend and O’Donovan’s sister, Susanne Lewzey, recounted the events leading up to the tragic incident. Lewzey described a jovial atmosphere at the party initially, with her brother and boyfriend getting along well but noted Bates becoming increasingly intoxicated as the evening progressed. She attempted to intervene and prevent Bates from driving but was unsuccessful, leading to the fatal collision.

Following the altercation at the party, Bates reportedly left with another family member but returned shortly after, resulting in the tragic hit-and-run incident. Witnesses described the chaotic scene as O’Donovan was struck by Bates’ car, prompting swift emergency response efforts.

Lewzey expressed shock at the sudden turn of events and described Bates’ behavior as unusual, emphasizing that she had never seen him in such an intoxicated state before. The trial continues, with Bates denying the murder charge but pleading guilty to manslaughter. The court proceedings are ongoing under the supervision of Judge Neil Flewitt KC.

Throughout the evening, the situation escalated rapidly, culminating in the tragic outcome that left O’Donovan fatally injured. The details presented during the trial paint a grim picture of a celebration turned deadly due to a series of unfortunate events.
