“Former Navy Chief Warns of Russia-Ukraine Nuclear Risk”

A former Navy chief has raised concerns about the potential escalation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine into a nuclear confrontation.

Admiral Lord West, who previously served as the First Sea Lord, issued a stark warning, stating that Britain is currently engaged in a de facto conflict with Moscow.

He highlighted the concept of “grey zone warfare,” which encompasses hostile activities outside conventional armed warfare, such as Russian interference with undersea cables and drone intrusions along the eastern flank of NATO.

In a podcast with the Lord Speaker, Lord West expressed the difficulty in finding a resolution to the conflict, emphasizing the undesirability of a full-scale war between NATO and Russia.

He raised concerns about the potential for Russia to resort to nuclear weapons if faced with a losing scenario in a direct conflict with NATO.

Former NATO General Secretary Lord Robertson, who led a comprehensive review of the nation’s defense capabilities, criticized the lack of preparedness in Britain to counter the threats it currently faces.

Experts have previously warned about increasing Russian activities targeting the UK, including cyberattacks, espionage missions, arson attacks, and submarine infiltrations.

MI5 Director Sir Ken McCallum recently highlighted Russia’s intent to disrupt and cause destruction globally, noting a shift towards using disposable proxies following the expulsion of Russian agents from European embassies.

Lord Robertson reiterated the urgent need for enhanced readiness and security measures, pointing out the ongoing cyberattacks and acts of sabotage orchestrated by the GRU, the Russian military intelligence agency, across Europe.

He emphasized that Vladimir Putin’s ambitions extend beyond territorial expansion in eastern Ukraine, causing concerns among neighboring countries like Moldova and Azerbaijan.

Supporting President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian government is deemed crucial in deterring Vladimir Putin’s aggressive actions and demonstrating that he cannot achieve his objectives through force.

Lord Robertson stressed the importance of preventing Putin from achieving his goals, noting that the current territorial gains made by Russia are minimal in the grand scheme of things.
