“Orkney Islands Named Top Family-Friendly Destination in UK”

A recent quality of life survey focusing on children’s well-being conducted by Halifax has identified the prime locations in the UK for families looking to settle down, with a concentration of top-ranking areas located in Scotland. The survey took into account various factors such as employment opportunities, housing sizes, internet connectivity, traffic conditions, and overall satisfaction of adults in the region. While regions across the North and South of England also made appearances on the list, the majority of top-ranking spots were dominated by Scottish locales.

Leading the pack for the fifth consecutive year is the Orkney Islands in Scotland, recognized as the premier destination for family living in the UK. The survey highlighted the high employment rates, low crime levels, exceptional academic performance, and smaller class sizes in primary schools as key factors contributing to Orkney’s top ranking.

James Stockan, the leader of the Orkney Islands council, expressed delight in the 2019 results, emphasizing the unique blend of community spirit and progressive, self-reliant mindset that sets Orkney apart as a special place to reside and work.

Situated off the northern coast of mainland Scotland, the Orkney Islands boast stunning natural landscapes and panoramic sea views, providing residents with ample opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities like long walks, aquatic sports, and wildlife expeditions.

Beyond its picturesque setting, Orkney is steeped in history, featuring ancient landmarks such as the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, Taversoe Tuick, and Midhowe Broch, which attract visitors keen on exploring the region’s cultural heritage.

Halifax’s managing director, Russell Galley, praised Orkney’s win, attributing its success to strong educational and employment metrics, low crime rates, and a high quality of life marked by vast open spaces that enhance residents’ well-being.

Joining Orkney in the top three spots for the best family-friendly living environments in the UK are the Shetland Islands and the Western Isles, both located in Scotland. The Shetland Islands boast the highest employment rate in Great Britain, while the Western Isles were recognized for their exceptional personal well-being ratings.

The rankings further include Hambleton in North Yorkshire, South Oxfordshire, Ribble Valley in Yorkshire, West Somerset, Mole Valley in Surrey, Chilterns, and West Oxfordshire. These regions have been acknowledged for their overall quality of life, education standards, and community well-being, making them desirable destinations for families across the UK.
