In June 1987, 16-year-old Theresa Ann Bier set off from Fresno, California, with 43-year-old Russell Welch, known as Skip, for an expedition to search for Bigfoot in the Sierra Nevada. Despite planning a camping trip, Theresa never returned.
Initially, Welch claimed he had dropped Theresa at school, but later altered his story dramatically, asserting that they had encountered Bigfoot in the Ghost Canyon woods, leading to Theresa excitedly pursuing the creature. When he looked back, Theresa had been taken by the entity.
A thorough search was conducted in Ghost Canyon by detectives, exploring the forests, rocks, meadows, and ridgelines. Belongings believed to be Theresa’s, including a purse, clothing fragments, photos, and personal items, were recovered at a campsite, yet no concrete evidence or trace of Theresa was found.
Despite deploying dogs that traced scents around the camp, no conclusive leads were uncovered. Welch faced charges of child-endangerment and child-stealing, which were dropped just before the trial in September 1987 due to insufficient evidence and the absence of Theresa’s remains.
Investigators noted Welch’s firm belief in Bigfoot creatures and his alleged ongoing interactions with a tribe of them.
