McDonald’s customers are expressing frustration following the announcement of modifications to the company’s loyalty program. The popular fast-food chain is set to raise the points requirement for redeeming free items through MyMcDonald’s Rewards.
Presently, customers need 5,500 points to claim items like a Big Mac, Double Fillet of Fish, Double Sausage and Egg McMuffin, and Nine Chicken Nuggets. However, starting March 17, the required points will increase to 6,500 for these items. Points are earned at a rate of 100 points per £1 spent at McDonald’s.
The current threshold for items such as a Medium Coffee or Small Fries is 1,500 points, but this will soon rise to 2,000 points. Additionally, the points needed for a regular McFlurry or an Apple Pie will escalate from 2,500 points to 3,500, while a Double Cheeseburger or a McChicken sandwich will require 5,000 points, up from 4,000 points.
Responding to social media discussions, one dissatisfied fan commented, “Not at all happy,” while another inquired about the start date to redeem their points before the changes take effect.
A McDonald’s spokesperson justified the adjustments, stating that they are necessary due to the escalating costs of food and supplies. Despite the point increase, the company has introduced new redemption options including Chicken Selects, Cheese sides, and a Sausage Sandwich to offer customers more variety.
The loyalty scheme alterations coincide with the launch of McDonald’s new menu in the UK, featuring innovative items like the Surf N’ Turf burger and the Chicken Cheeseburger. The menu also includes the Espresso Milkshake and Chilli Cheese Bites for customers to savor.
