“Ukrainians Resilient Amidst Crisis: Child Exploitation Concerns and Oligarch Controversy

I recently came back from providing essential assistance to first responders and union members in the Donbas area of Ukraine. Despite facing daily challenges like power outages, missile attacks, and civilian casualties, Ukrainians exhibit remarkable resilience. While desiring peace, they are steadfast in resisting Russian control and the hardships of occupation.

During my visit to the Save Ukraine center, I encountered children rescued from occupied territories, revealing distressing statistics. Tragically, one in ten of these children experienced sexual abuse, with over 20,000 children estimated to have been taken by Russia, indicating widespread child exploitation.

The situation is further complicated by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich’s reluctance to transfer £2.5 billion from the Chelsea FC sale to aid Ukraine, amidst legal disputes over frozen assets in Jersey, with the assistance of a member of the Conservative Shadow Cabinet, Lord Wolfson KC.

The involvement of Lord Wolfson in representing Abramovich, alongside Eric Herschmann, a former Trump advisor, raises concerns about maintaining business relationships with sanctioned oligarchs, especially given the critical circumstances in Ukraine. The argument that this is merely a legal representation does little to instill confidence.

The ongoing legal battles must not be viewed in isolation, considering the grave humanitarian crises in Ukraine. Advocates for closer ties with Moscow, including some populist and far-right figures in the West, pose a risk to international stability. It is imperative to hold accountable those who engage with sanctioned individuals like Abramovich, particularly in times of conflict and turmoil.

To address this issue, urgent action is needed, including the enactment of emergency legislation to prevent oligarchs from exploiting the UK legal system and redirecting nearly £30 billion in frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine. Solidarity with Ukraine is crucial as it fights for democracy, calling for public support outside Tory Headquarters on January 7th to stand in solidarity with the country and demand accountability.
