“Teen Found Dead in Chimney After 7 Years Missing”

A young man who disappeared from his residence was discovered stuck in a chimney seven years later, with the circumstances surrounding his presence there remaining unclear. Joshua Maddux, aged 18, informed his family that he was taking a brief stroll in May 2008 from their residence in Woodland Park, Teller County.

Following his failure to return home, his family raised an alarm, and emergency services conducted a thorough search in the local vicinity to locate the boy. Despite the hope held by his family that he might have chosen to leave town and embark on a new life, Joshua’s sister Kate mentioned on the News of Woodland Park website.

Meanwhile, his father, Mike, tirelessly searched homeless shelters and campgrounds in the nearby area in hopes of finding his missing son alive. Recounting his experience to Sky News, Mike expressed the shock of Joshua not returning home after one morning, leading them to believe he was with friends, though no one had any information about his whereabouts. The long period of uncertainty left the family in a state of suspended grief.

Tragically, the family’s hopes were shattered seven years later when Joshua’s remains were located in an abandoned cabin outside Colorado Springs in 2015. Dental records positively identified the body as that of the missing teenager.

Teller County Coroner Al Born addressed the media, acknowledging that certain aspects of the incident may remain unanswered. It was speculated that Joshua got stuck while attempting to descend the chimney, which was situated less than a mile from his home.

The cause of Joshua’s death was deemed accidental, with no signs of foul play or trauma evident. The property owner, Chuck Murphy, mentioned rarely visiting the cabin over the past decade, noting the presence of a strong odor and a large piece of furniture obstructing the fireplace, deterring any need to inspect it.

During renovations at the cabin, construction workers moved the obstructing furniture and discovered Joshua’s neatly folded clothes at the chimney’s base. The mummified remains of Joshua were found inside the chimney, suggesting he had entered head-first in an apparent effort to access the locked property.

Local residents expressed shock and unease at the circumstances of Joshua’s demise, with speculation on how he managed to enter the chimney, given its metal covering that posed a challenge for access. Additionally, the discovery of Joshua wearing a ribbed thermal shirt raised further questions about the peculiar positioning of his clothes within the chimney.

Following a comprehensive investigation, including an autopsy, authorities concluded that Joshua’s death resulted from accidental hypothermia and exposure to the elements, indicating he became trapped.

Despite the ruling, County Coroner Al Born admitted the perplexity of the case, stating that several aspects remained unanswered. Joshua’s sister, Kate, penned an emotional tribute after the discovery of his remains, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to finally lay Josh to rest with a proper memorial service.
