BBC to Honor Fawlty Towers’ Prunella Scales Tonight

The BBC has announced intentions to pay tribute to Prunella Scales, known for her role in Fawlty Towers, following her recent passing at the age of 93. The broadcaster confirmed that an episode of the series titled “The Builders” will air on BBC One tonight at 8pm as a gesture of respect. Scales, who played Sybil in the iconic BBC comedy alongside John Cleese as Basil Fawlty, passed away peacefully at her home in London. Her family disclosed that she had been watching Fawlty Towers the day before she died.

In a heartfelt statement, Scales’ sons expressed gratitude for the care she received in her final days and shared details about her long and successful acting career. BBC Comedy Director Jon Petrie and co-star John Cleese both expressed sadness over her passing, highlighting her comedic talent and impact on audiences.

Fawlty Towers, which won a Bafta for best scripted comedy in 1976, marked 50 years since its debut this year. Mia Austen, who currently portrays Sybil in the Fawlty Towers stage production, described it as an honor to step into the role made famous by Scales.

West End venues are set to dim their lights in memory of Scales, a versatile actress known for her work on stage and screen. Scales had a significant impact on British comedy and entertainment, with a career spanning several decades across various mediums. Her openness about living with dementia also raised awareness and inspired many.
