“Co-op Introduces ‘Flexi Checkouts’ to Cut Wait Times”

Co-op is set to launch innovative “flexi checkouts” aimed at reducing wait times for customers at its stores. These smart tills, provided by American company Diebold Nixdorf, can seamlessly switch between self-service and cashier-operated modes based on customer preferences. The initiative, to be implemented in 150 Co-op stores by April, aims to enhance convenience and decrease queue times.

Apart from the flexibility in checkout modes, the screens on these new tills will display price discounts, offers, and future potential services like parcel collections. Co-op claims to be the pioneering UK supermarket in utilizing this advanced technology.

David Tyas, Co-op’s Head of Operations, Support Centre, and Innovation, emphasized the company’s commitment to local communities by providing a mix of personalized service from friendly store staff and quick, efficient transactions through advanced checkout technology. Co-op’s strategy includes investing in and innovating the physical store environment to create enjoyable shopping experiences for all customers.

In other news, Co-op has announced the opening of 18 new or revamped stores in the first quarter of 2026. The inaugural store of the year is situated in Willowbrook Park, Didcot in Oxfordshire, within a new neighborhood development. Additionally, store upgrades in locations like Eastern Green, Coventry, and Ealing, London, are part of the company’s ongoing efforts to cater to the diverse needs of local communities.

Kate McCrae, Co-op Operations Director, highlighted the company’s focus on providing quality products, value, and a wide range of promotions to enhance the shopping experience for members and customers. The opening of the first store in 2026 marks the beginning of an active expansion program aimed at strengthening Co-op’s presence in various high streets and communities across the UK.

Furthermore, Co-op has revealed plans to create numerous new apprenticeship opportunities in the coming years. With a commitment of £70 million through its Levy Share service, the retail giant aims to establish 7,000 matched apprenticeships by 2030, demonstrating its dedication to workforce development and community engagement.
