A man who consistently maintained his innocence in the rape and murder case of his neighbor from 27 years ago was put to death on death row today. Norman Mearle Grim Jr, aged 65, was executed for the sexual assault and first-degree murder of Cynthia Campbell, despite his claims of innocence during the court proceedings. The execution was carried out using a three-drug injection in Florida, marking the state’s 15th execution this year.
When given the opportunity to make a final statement, Grim declined, simply stating, “No sir.” Following the injection, he exhibited heavy breathing and slight twitching before being pronounced dead, almost three decades after the tragic death of Ms. Campbell.
After Ms. Campbell went missing in 1998, her body was discovered in the waters near the Pensacola Bay Bridge in Florida, showing signs of severe blunt-force injuries to her face and head, along with multiple stab wounds to the chest. Grim’s connection to the crime was confirmed through DNA evidence.
Despite Grim’s persistent denial of the charges, he was found guilty in 2000 and subsequently sentenced to death. This sentence was carried out today, 27 years after the crime took place. Florida has seen a record number of executions this year, surpassing other states like Texas and Alabama.
Since the reinstatement of the death penalty in 1976 by the US Supreme Court, Florida has witnessed a significant rise in executions, with the highest previous annual total being eight in 2014. Inmates on death row have the option to appeal to both the Florida Supreme Court and the US Supreme Court before their execution. Grim chose not to receive any visitors or spiritual guidance on the day of his execution.
As of now, a total of 40 court-ordered executions have taken place in the US this year, with 18 more scheduled for the remainder of this year and the following year. Florida remains at the forefront in executing individuals, with plans for two more executions in the coming month, as authorized by Governor Ron DeSantis.
The next scheduled execution in Florida is that of Bryan Fredrick Jennings, aged 66, set for November 13. Jennings was convicted of raping and murdering a six-year-old girl in 1979, after breaking into her home in central Florida and abducting her.
