In the past, the gas chamber was commonly used in the US for executing criminals before the prevalence of lethal injection. The turning point came with the case of Jimmy Lee Gray, a notorious criminal with a history of violence even before his capital punishment.
Gray’s criminal record included the murder of his 16-year-old girlfriend in Arizona at the age of 19. Despite serving only seven years of a 20-to-life sentence for this crime, Gray went on to abduct and kill a three-year-old girl in a horrifying manner, leading to his eventual capture by the police.
During Gray’s execution in the gas chamber at Mississippi State Penitentiary, a lack of proper restraints caused him to violently convulse and repeatedly hit his head against a steel pole, causing immense suffering. Witnessing this cruelty, officials eventually cleared the room, and Gray’s heart continued to beat for 12 more minutes post his death pronouncement, prompting criticism of the excruciating method used.
This brutal execution led to a swift decision by Mississippi to discontinue gas chamber executions for future sentences, highlighting the inhumanity and inefficacy of this method.
