“Tragic Deaths Shake Extreme Sports Community”

A thrill-seeking speed flyer tragically lost his life in Turkey during a holiday adventure. Vyacheslav Gribanov, 37, crashed into rocks on Babadag mountain after taking off from nearly 6,000 feet above ground. This incident marks the third fatality within a short span of time in the region among free flyers. Speed flying, a high-intensity sport involving rapid descents close to the terrain using a compact, high-performance wing, is known for its risks.

Gribanov reportedly lost control shortly after launching on his solo flight, leading to a fatal plunge. Footage captured the moment he embarked on his final flight before the tragic accident occurred. Speed flying entails flying at speeds of up to 95mph in proximity to the ground due to the smaller wing size, enabling higher speeds and steeper descents. The details surrounding the crash, including the cause, remain under investigation as efforts to locate Gribanov’s lost camera are ongoing.

An experienced paraglider from St. Petersburg, Gribanov had recently transitioned to speed flying and was undergoing training with an instructor. Reports indicate that a German tourist and a Polish individual also met fatal outcomes in flying-related incidents in the area, making the number of deaths unusual.

In a separate incident back in July, another extreme sports enthusiast, Andreas Tonelli, tragically perished after a biking mishap that led to a 600-foot fall into a ravine in the Dolomites, Italy. Tonelli, a 48-year-old with a significant following on Instagram, where he shared his daring mountain biking escapades, failed to return home after a ride, prompting a search that ended in the discovery of his body the following day.

Moments before the fatal fall, Tonelli had shared an Instagram story displaying his contentment at the summit. His posts often reflected his passion for travel, as he had been organizing bike trips since 2003 across various regions, including Italy, Europe, and globally. Tonelli’s adventurous spirit extended to photography, hiking, climbing, and notable achievements such as conquering the Nevado Ojos de Salado volcano in Chile.

Among his remarkable accomplishments was completing challenging routes like L’Onda di Hokusai (‘Hokusai Wave’) in the Dolomites and scaling the Tupungato volcano in central Chile, showcasing his love for adventure and exploration.
