A lifelong teaching ban has been imposed on a teacher who engaged in sexual activity with a former student he had trained at a school. Benjamin Steven Hiscox, now 34, requested the student, known as Pupil A, to select a sex toy before her parents discovered their relationship. The incidents occurred during Hiscox’s training period at Madras College in St Andrews, where Pupil A was a student, while he was a math teacher at South Nottinghamshire Academy in Radcliffe on Trent.
The situation came to light when Pupil A’s parents became aware of the relationship, leading to investigations by Police Scotland and a subsequent referral to the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA). An official report by the TRA disclosed that Pupil A initiated contact with Hiscox on Instagram, leading to explicit conversations that culminated in a physical meeting at a hotel in October 2022.
During their hotel encounter, Hiscox allegedly requested Pupil A to wear her school uniform, an act later attributed to Pupil A by Hiscox. The TRA panel determined that Hiscox likely instructed Pupil A to wear the uniform and engaged in sexual activities during their stay, accompanied by alcohol consumption.
Despite Hiscox’s claim of being unaware of Pupil A’s age and former student status, evidence suggested otherwise, with Pupil A allegedly disclosing this information earlier in their interactions. Police investigations did not result in criminal charges due to the student’s age and the absence of a teacher-student relationship at the time. However, the TRA found Hiscox’s actions to be sexually driven, leading to a permanent teaching ban in England.
The TRA decision-maker, David Oakley, highlighted Hiscox’s lack of remorse and insight, indicating a potential risk of reoffending. Hiscox’s employment with South Nottinghamshire Academy was terminated in May 2023 following the TRA’s ruling. Various entities involved in the case have been approached for comments by Mirror Online.
