A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake has resulted in the deaths of at least 20 individuals and left approximately 300 others wounded in Afghanistan.
The seismic event occurred at 12:59am local time, about 14 miles west-southwest of Khulm. The US Geological Survey issued a warning of “significant casualties” and the potential for widespread devastation as the quake struck at a depth of 28 kilometers (17 miles).
Sharafat Zaman, a representative from the Ministry of Public Health, confirmed the loss of 20 lives and reported 320 injuries. Most of the injured sustained minor injuries and were discharged after receiving medical attention.
Rescue operations have been initiated in the affected regions, particularly in Balkh and Samangan provinces, which have reportedly suffered severe damage. Emergency teams are actively assisting the injured in relocating, while affected households are receiving necessary aid.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the chief spokesperson for the Taliban government, stated that the earthquake impacted Balkh, Samangan, and Baghlan areas. Government teams have been deployed to offer assistance to those in need.
The renowned Blue Mosque in Mazar-e-Sharif was among the structures damaged by the earthquake. Footage circulating online depicted fallen bricks from the walls of the mosque, though the overall structure remained intact.
The Afghanistan Defense Ministry reported that a rockslide temporarily blocked a mountain highway connecting Kabul to Mazar-e-Sharif, but the road was later reopened. Individuals injured and stranded on the highway were safely transported to hospitals.
This disaster follows closely on the heels of a previous earthquake in eastern Afghanistan. Immediate aid was dispatched by UN teams on-site, affirming solidarity with the affected communities and ensuring essential support will be provided.
