A tour operator, Andy Lamb of Wales Outdoors, has criticized the Snowdon Mountain Railway (SMR), a popular heritage railway in the UK, for its carriages with foggy windows and leaks. Lamb expressed disappointment over last-minute cancellations and subpar customer experiences on the historic train. Despite receiving mixed reactions online, with some defending the authentic heritage experience, Lamb remains firm in his decision to stop recommending SMR to his clients.
Established by professional mountain guide Andy over three decades ago, Wales Outdoors offers various excursions, including trips to the summit of Snowdon via the mountain’s rack-and-pinion railway. However, following ongoing issues, Lamb announced that his company will no longer endorse SMR to its customers.
In response to Lamb’s complaints, SMR acknowledged the need to enhance customer support during weather-related disruptions. The railway is currently undergoing an IT upgrade to improve group bookings, communication, and overall customer engagement to ensure a better visitor experience.
Lamb detailed multiple grievances to SMR after a recent incident involving his clients, where they were informed last minute that their journey to the summit might be impacted by high wind speeds. Despite being offered a refund, the passengers chose to proceed, only to be turned back partway into the journey due to safety concerns.
The train’s exposed route along the rugged slopes often faces weather-related challenges, leading to potential summit closures. Passengers are advised that trips are weather-dependent, and safety measures are prioritized.
Unlike modern enclosed trains, heritage trains like SMR have open-air carriages and older designs, which may not offer the same level of comfort. Despite complaints about wet conditions and steamy windows, some travelers appreciate the authentic heritage experience.
With a new partnership with Vennersys, SMR aims to streamline operations, enhance communication, and provide a more personalized visitor experience through modern ticketing and management systems. However, for Wales Outdoors, the improvements come too late, as Lamb has decided to sever ties with SMR due to ongoing concerns.
SMR emphasizes passenger and staff safety as their top priority and assures continuous efforts to enhance passenger comfort and overall journey experience. Despite challenges, the railway remains committed to delivering a safe and memorable trip to the highest point in Wales.
