MI5 has issued a crucial alert to Members of Parliament (MPs) following the discovery of multiple attempts by Chinese spies to “recruit and nurture” individuals with close ties to Westminster.
According to Security Minister Dan Jarvis, Chinese intelligence operatives are masquerading as businesses or external recruiters to ensnare MPs, Lords, and Parliamentary personnel. They have been utilizing LinkedIn profiles under the identities of two women to gather intelligence.
Addressing the Commons, Mr. Jarvis informed MPs of the espionage alert issued by MI5, cautioning about the continuous targeting of British democratic institutions by Chinese entities. He emphasized that China places a relatively low value on what information is deemed important, aiming to engage individuals with access to sensitive data regarding Parliament and the UK government.
The warning extends beyond parliamentarians to include parliamentary staff, economists, think tank members, geopolitical advisors, and government officials, all of whom have been sought after for their connections and insider knowledge.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has conveyed a clear message to her Chinese counterpart that such activities will not be tolerated. The government is taking measures to combat covert political funding and is developing enhanced capabilities to counter foreign interference.
In a letter to lawmakers, Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle highlighted the attempts by the Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS) to establish relationships within Westminster. The MSS aims to gather information through professional networking platforms, recruitment agencies, and consultants acting on their behalf.
The alert specifically mentions two headhunters, Amanda Qiu (BR-YR Executive Search) and Shirly Shen (Internship Union), who are using LinkedIn profiles on behalf of China’s MSS to make contact. MI5’s alert outlines the MSS’s objective of amassing sensitive UK information for strategic advantages.
Mr. Jarvis disclosed plans to allocate £170 million to upgrade the secure encryption technology used by officials and £130 million to enhance the UK’s defenses against threats posed by nations like China.
