“Man denies murder charge after fatal car strike”

A court has heard the tragic incident where a man fatally struck his girlfriend’s brother with a car on the same day they met for the first time, just hours after forming a close bond. The victim, Martin O’Donovan, lost his life when a vehicle collided with him outside his sibling’s residence in April of this year, following a celebration of their mother’s 70th birthday. Stephen Bates, from Mossley Hill, Merseyside, is currently standing trial at Liverpool Crown Court facing charges of murder, which he denies.

Allegedly, Bates proceeded to make threats to O’Donovan after a drunken altercation, and later returned to the location in his Ford Fiesta. Reportedly, he intentionally drove the car at O’Donovan, causing severe head injuries that left him trapped under the vehicle. Bates allegedly admitted to police officers at the scene that he was aware of his actions and realized the gravity of the situation.

During the trial, jurors were shown a recorded interview in which Susanne Lewzey, Bates’ girlfriend and O’Donovan’s sister, recounted the events leading up to the tragic incident. Lewzey described a gathering where everyone was enjoying themselves, with her brother and boyfriend hitting it off immediately. However, as the night progressed, Bates became heavily intoxicated, leading to a confrontation and escalating tensions.

After a series of altercations, Bates left the scene but then directed a family member to his nearby residence and drove off without her. Moments later, he allegedly drove his car into O’Donovan, resulting in a fatal impact. Lewzey described the chaotic scene, including attempts to stop Bates and the devastating moment when her brother was struck by the vehicle.

Bates, represented by Andrew Haslam KC and Nicola Daley, has pleaded guilty to manslaughter but denies the charge of murder. The trial, overseen by Judge Neil Flewitt KC, is ongoing.
