Baroness Helen Newlove, the Victims’ Commissioner, has sadly passed away after a brief illness. Known for her unwavering dedication to combatting antisocial behavior following her husband’s tragic murder by delinquents, she was celebrated as a champion of victims’ and witnesses’ rights.
Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary David Lammy expressed deep sorrow over the news, praising Baroness Newlove’s remarkable service as an extraordinary public servant characterized by courage, compassion, and an unyielding commitment to justice. In a heart-wrenching incident in 2007, her husband Garry was brutally killed by a group of intoxicated youths in front of their daughters, culminating a series of abusive and violent acts targeting their family in Padgate, Cheshire.
Baroness Newlove’s relentless advocacy post the devastating loss of her husband led to significant strides in addressing antisocial behavior and binge drinking issues. Her notable contributions led to her appointment as the Government Champion for Active, Safer Communities in 2010, where she collaborated with locals to enhance community safety and develop solutions for local challenges. Additionally, she was honored with a peerage nomination in the Dissolution Honors list by former Prime Minister David Cameron in the same year.
Transitioning into the role of Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords in 2021, Baroness Newlove continued her mission of amplifying the voices of victims. From 2013 to 2019, she served as the Victims’ Commissioner and made a significant return for a one-year term in October 2023 due to a vacant position left unfilled by the Tories.
