An elderly man, aged 86, passed away following an alleged assault during a burglary at his residence, which deeply impacted the local community, according to residents. John Burke, who had been in poor health, lived in a ground floor flat with his wife and was targeted by a suspected serial burglar named Ashley Malcolm, aged 39. Malcolm is facing charges for the murder of Burke, who succumbed to his injuries the day after the incident.
Additionally, Malcolm is accused of committing two other burglaries before targeting John’s home in Hackney, London. The elderly man was assaulted, taken to the hospital, then discharged, only to pass away at home the next day. A resident of the area, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed sadness over the situation, highlighting John’s declining health and describing him as a kind and integral part of the neighborhood where he would interact with neighbors daily.
John, known to have a son who regularly visited him, became the subject of a murder investigation after further medical evidence emerged. Malcolm, residing in Reighton Road, Hackney, is set to appear in court on November 11 to face the murder charge. Acting Det Chief Supt Brittany Clarke acknowledged the community’s concerns, emphasizing the swift police response and expressing condolences to John’s loved ones.
Malcolm faces previous charges related to robbery and is linked to additional criminal activities, including two burglaries and an attempted break-in in Hackney in September.
