An investigation has been launched by authorities and a coroner following the death of an 80-year-old woman who was left stranded on a remote island after missing her cruise ship during a 60-day voyage around Australia. The woman, who was on an expensive cruise ticket, was not reported missing until a day after she was supposed to re-board the ship, which had departed from Cairns, Queensland.
It is believed that the woman had been hiking on Lizard Island before becoming separated from her group and failing to return to the ship. Reports suggest she may have fallen off a cliff, leading to her disappearance. Concerns about safety protocols have been raised by witnesses on another vessel anchored nearby, questioning the procedures followed during the incident.
After a search and rescue operation, the woman’s remains were discovered on the island. Coral Expeditions, the cruise operator, confirmed the tragic incident and stated that they had been in contact with the authorities and the woman’s family. The circumstances surrounding the woman’s death are still under investigation by the relevant authorities.
