Donald Trump has urged for the imprisonment and execution of Democratic members of Congress following a video by former military officials advising servicemen and women that they have the right to refuse unlawful orders. The group in the video emphasized the importance of upholding the constitution and not carrying out orders that violate the law.
Concerns have arisen over Trump’s potential escalation of military deployment against protesters in Democratic-led cities. This comes after the UK suspended intelligence sharing over worries that Trump’s actions might breach international law regarding airstrikes on alleged drug boats in Venezuela.
Trump reacted to the video on Truth Social, labeling the content as seditious behavior and calling for the individuals involved to be locked up. He further endorsed comments suggesting severe punishment, including death, for the alleged traitors. Trump also demanded the arrest and trial of those he deemed as threats to the country, emphasizing the need to set an example.
Using his platform on Truth Social, Trump has previously directed the Justice Department to investigate his adversaries, resulting in cases against figures like James Comey and inquiries into prominent Democrats associated with Jeffrey Epstein, such as Bill Clinton.
Legal experts suggest that the video likely does not meet the criteria for sedition under US law, and even if it did, sedition does not carry a death penalty in the United States.
