A tragic incident involving fireworks in the southern Los Angeles neighborhood of Vermont Knolls has resulted in the death of a 17-year-old teenager. The teenager was playing with fireworks in his backyard when a loud explosion was heard by neighbors on Wednesday night around 9:30 pm. The use of fireworks is illegal in Los Angeles, and it is suspected that the ones involved may have been homemade.
Emergency services were called to the scene, and the Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to the location where they found the teenager on fire. He was quickly taken to the hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
Local authorities indicated that the fireworks might have been homemade, and the teenager’s family was unaware of his possession or use of fireworks. Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion resembling a bomb, prompting the dispatch of the LAPD Bomb Squad for further investigation.
The police confirmed that the teenager was handling pyrotechnic materials that exploded, leading to the discovery of a significant amount of illegal pyrotechnic devices. These explosives were safely secured, and there are no ongoing safety concerns for the public.
The City of Los Angeles strictly prohibits all fireworks activities, including possession, sale, or use. Community activist Najee Ali expressed concern over the availability of illegal fireworks to children, emphasizing the unnecessary tragedy of the teenager’s death.
Although firework-related deaths in the U.S. are relatively low annually, injuries are more common, with misuse and malfunctions posing a significant risk, as highlighted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
