The spouse of a cherished mother who passed away suddenly has outlined his intentions to commemorate her legacy on the first anniversary of her death.
Emily Moss, renowned for being an exceptional mother and a remarkably generous individual from Burnage, Greater Manchester, tragically succumbed to sudden heart failure in November 2024 after dropping off the couple’s then four-year-old daughter at a dance class.
To honor the occasion, her husband Nathan, aged 34, will embark on a climb up Mount Toubkal in North Africa, which stands as the continent’s highest peak at 13,671 feet. His goal is to raise funds for Trafford Domestic Abuse Services (TDAS), a charity where Emily had previously been employed.
Discussing Emily’s heart condition, peripartum cardiomyopathy, Nathan shared, “When she gave birth to Isobel, we discovered she had this heart condition. It was a challenging period for us as we transitioned from a couple to parents, only to then learn about Emily’s heart condition. Her condition was under control through medication. Her last medical check-up in August showed positive results.”
He further expressed, “Although we were aware of the possibility, the encouraging test outcomes had eased our concerns. Emily had taken Isobel to her dance class, returned home, and was preparing to go shopping with her mother. Upon noticing her delay, her mother went upstairs and found her collapsed due to a heart attack.”
Nathan was away at work in Birmingham when Emily’s mother made the discovery. Upon reaching the hospital in Greater Manchester, he sensed that something was amiss.
“I wasn’t informed of her passing initially. I was told she had collapsed. However, upon being taken to a separate room at the hospital, I realized she had passed away, as I would have been directed to her bedside otherwise,” he remarked.
Describing the funeral held in December as “crowded,” with approximately 300 attendees and many outside in the cold, Nathan reflected on the widespread admiration for Emily and the lives she had touched.
The couple, who met during high school and commenced dating at ages 16 and 17, tied the knot on November 27, 2018, and had been contemplating expanding their family before the tragedy struck.
Nathan is now dedicated to preserving Emily’s memory by fundraising for the domestic abuse charity.
“She possessed an incredibly generous nature. Forgiveness came naturally to her. She would go to great lengths to aid others, often overlooking her own needs. I’m striving to emulate Emily more by being open, assisting others, and exercising patience,” he shared.
“Being a mother was perhaps her most cherished role, channeling all her patience into parenting. She was exceptional. I was clueless, and she was simply outstanding. A fantastic parent and mom, which is also a credit to her own mother.
“One of my greatest challenges post her passing has been attempting to mirror her ways. Learning how to style our daughter’s hair has been particularly difficult for me, as I had typically left it to her mother. Thankfully, her best friend enrolled me in a hairdressing course for dads.”
Nathan, accompanied by his close friend Will Sargison, is scheduled to ascend Mount Toubkal in Morocco from November 28 to 29. In just a week, his GoFundMe campaign has amassed over £2,000, with all proceeds directed towards TDAS to assist domestic violence victims in finding new housing.
“These few weeks are always emotionally taxing – my birthday falls on the 24th, our anniversary on the 27th, and her death anniversary on the 9th. This journey serves as a meaningful way for me to honor Emily and for others to remember her too by aiding those in need,” he expressed.
Nathan and his family are also organizing a surprise trip to Disneyland for Isobel and her cousins during the weekend of Emily’s passing anniversary.
