“PIP Benefits Duration Extended from April 2026”

The duration of benefits for individuals applying for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) will be prolonged starting in April to address the backlog issue.

PIP serves as the primary disability benefit for working-age individuals in the UK. Eligibility for PIP is determined by the impact of an individual’s illness, disability, or mental health condition on their daily life, rather than the condition itself.

Currently, PIP awards are typically granted for a limited period, often as brief as nine months. However, effective April 2026, this period will be extended to a minimum of three years for the majority of new PIP applicants aged 25 and above, with the possibility of an extension to five years upon their subsequent review if they remain eligible.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) stated that this initiative aims to free up healthcare professionals to conduct more in-person assessments and facilitate additional reassessments.

These operational modifications are distinct from the Timms Review, which will examine the role of PIP, eligibility criteria for the daily living and mobility components, and the assessment process.

PIP consists of two components: the daily living component and the mobility component. The standard rate for the daily living component is £73.90 per week, while the higher rate is £110.40 per week. For the mobility component, the standard rate is £29.20 per week, and the higher rate is £77.05 per week. It is essential to inform the DWP if there are any changes in your health or condition.

Individuals who are terminally ill usually receive PIP automatically without undergoing an assessment. Those awarded PIP under the special rules for terminal illness will have a three-year award period before undergoing a review.

PIP is accessible to individuals aged over 16 but under the state pension age. If you receive PIP and reach state pension age, your claim will typically continue. You may be eligible to submit a new claim at state pension age if you met the PIP eligibility criteria in the past 12 months.
