Sky is rolling out a new feature called Real Time for Sky Glass and Sky Stream, set to launch tomorrow. The enhancement is perfectly timed for the upcoming World Cup starting on Thursday, aiming to address the existing streaming delay that many users encounter. This delay has been a common frustration for sports enthusiasts, particularly with services like BBC iPlayer and ITVX often trailing traditional broadcasts by up to 40 seconds. The lag can result in awkward situations, such as hearing neighbors react to a goal before it appears on your screen. Real Time, once activated, promises to significantly diminish this delay, providing a more immediate viewing experience.
Initially introduced for Premier League matches in 2024, the lower-latency streaming technology is now being expanded to cover BBC and ITV broadcasts, making it accessible for major events like the World Cup.
In an official statement, Sky announced the launch of Real Time, powered by Sky OS, to bridge the gap between live action and on-screen viewing for sports events. This feature, available for select live sports including the World Cup on BBC and ITV, is designed to help fans enjoy matches with reduced lag and fewer spoilers.
To enable Real Time on their screens, viewers can opt for the feature during supported live sports broadcasts by selecting the Real Time option on their devices. This functionality is available on both Sky Glass and Sky Stream through an opt-in button or specific channels, including BBC One HD RT (EPG channels 926–944) and ITV1 HD RT (EPG channel 945).
The transition to Sky Glass and Sky Stream signifies Sky’s departure from the satellite-based Sky Q platform. Unlike Sky Q, these services operate via broadband, offering advantages such as easy self-installation, regular software updates, and seamless integration with streaming platforms like Netflix, Apple TV+, and Disney+.
As Sky focuses on internet-delivered television and enhanced streaming experiences, Sky Glass and Sky Stream remain crucial components of the company’s strategy, catering to users seeking a more streamlined and modern viewing experience.
