Security experts are warning Android users about a new threat posed by the Rokarolla malware. This malicious software can infiltrate devices through popular applications, compromising sensitive data like banking information. Once installed, Rokarolla can even create fake lock screens to steal passwords and PIN numbers.
The latest scheme discovered by Zimperium takes advantage of Android’s ability to install apps from unofficial sources. Users searching for apps such as TikTok or Chrome may be redirected to fake websites offering counterfeit software bundled with Rokarolla.
These deceptive apps request numerous permissions, making it easy for users to unknowingly grant access to their personal data. Once granted, cybercriminals exploit this access to steal information from over 200 financial, cryptocurrency, and social media applications.
To avoid falling victim to Rokarolla, it is recommended to only download applications from the secure Google Play Store. Sideloading apps from unofficial sources poses significant risks. Enabling Google Play Protect can also provide an additional layer of security against such threats.
