Islington Council in London has introduced a new speed limit of 10mph on St John Street near Smithfield Market. This decision has sparked a mixed reaction among local residents. While some residents criticized the move, expressing frustration over the slow speed affecting their daily commute, others supported the measure for potential safety benefits.
One resident, Phil Cudlipp, highlighted the challenge of riding motorcycles at such a low speed, noting the impact on his ability to navigate the area effectively. Concerns were also raised about potential traffic congestion due to the reduced speed limit, with worries about increased emissions and vehicle idling at traffic lights.
The implementation of the 10mph limit follows recommendations from a road safety charity to reduce speeds in pedestrian-heavy areas. Despite the backlash from some individuals, including a taxi driver who deemed the measure “ridiculous,” there were those who welcomed the change, citing potential safety enhancements for cyclists and pedestrians in the vicinity.
Local businesses, like Kayk Panch’s newsagent and off-license, expressed concerns about the ongoing roadworks affecting their revenue. The construction works are part of a larger project aimed at enhancing the streetscape with new cycling infrastructure and green spaces.
Islington Council clarified that the 10mph speed restriction is temporary and will be enforced until the completion of the construction works aimed at improving the area’s infrastructure and promoting sustainable transportation options.
