Ex-UKIP Leader Jailed for Russian Bribes

Former Reform UK leader in Wales and former ally of Nigel Farage, Nathan Gill, has been sentenced to prison for accepting bribes from Russia while serving in the European Parliament. Gill confessed to accepting money from tycoon Oleg Voloshyn to deliver scripted speeches and promote a pro-Russian agenda during his time as an MEP.

The court revealed that counter terrorism officers uncovered incriminating WhatsApp messages between Gill and Voloshyn, exposing their illicit dealings. Gill received a 10-and-a-half-year jail term for what the judge described as a severe betrayal of the trust placed in him by his constituents.

The judge condemned Gill’s actions, stating that he abused his authority for financial and political gains, compromising the integrity of the European Parliament. Gill’s involvement with Russian interests was deemed unacceptable, especially during a sensitive period of relations between the EU and Ukraine.

In response to the sentencing, Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey criticized Gill’s actions, labeling him a traitor and emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation into Russian interference in UK politics. Similarly, armed forces minister Al Carns called for a comprehensive probe into Reform UK, denouncing Gill’s behavior as disgraceful.

Prosecutors highlighted a series of messages dating back to September 2018, showing Gill’s agreements to act in specific ways in exchange for monetary rewards. Gill’s activities were deemed of the highest level of culpability, as he not only compromised his position as an MEP but also the interests of multiple nations.

Gill’s defense team acknowledged the gravity of his actions, noting the breach of trust and integrity by accepting bribes. The disgraced politician, who once led UKIP Wales and later Reform UK Wales, faced criticism from various political figures for his treacherous behavior.

Security Minister Dan Jarvis condemned Gill’s actions as a betrayal of national security, emphasizing the government’s commitment to combatting foreign interference. The court’s decision to convict Gill for his corrupt dealings sends a strong message against those who seek to undermine democratic values.
