“Hospitals in Bristol and Wirral Declare Critical Incidents”

A situation of critical incident has been announced in several medical facilities in Bristol and Weston-super-Mare due to significant strain caused by high demand. The University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) declared the incident, impacting all hospitals under its jurisdiction, including the Bristol Royal Infirmary, Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, St Michaels Hospital, and Weston General Hospital.

The decision to declare the incident was made in response to the surge in demand experienced by the hospitals. Professor Stuart Walker, the Hospital Managing Director at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, stated in a released statement that the trust is facing substantial pressures affecting the hospitals.

The NHS defines a critical incident as a situation where an organization loses its ability to provide critical services temporarily or permanently due to disruptions, potentially leading to harm to patients or an unsafe environment, necessitating special measures and support from external agencies to restore normal operations.

In a related development, Arrowe Park Hospital, part of Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, recently halted elective procedures to address an ongoing issue. The trust has taken steps to address the situation, such as acquiring new instruments and borrowing equipment from nearby NHS entities.

An internal communication obtained by the Liverpool Echo revealed that the trust is seeking assistance from other NHS trusts in the region to manage the disruption. Patients have been redirected to Aintree Hospital and the Countess of Chester Hospital to alleviate the situation.

Staff at Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust were informed via an internal email about an ongoing issue affecting surgical instruments in the Sterile Service Department. As a precautionary measure, elective activities were temporarily paused while the matter was being addressed. The trust has implemented command and control structures to manage the critical incident and has procured additional surgical instruments to minimize disruptions to patients.

The incident has created concerns among patients and their families. One patient expressed worry about delayed surgeries due to the lack of safe, sterile equipment at the hospital, emphasizing the importance of patient safety.

A spokesperson for Wirral University Teaching Hospital acknowledged the issue in the Sterile Services Department affecting surgical instruments and the decision to declare a Critical Incident. Patient safety remains a top priority, and the trust is working diligently to manage the incident effectively while seeking support from other trusts to mitigate the impact on patients.
