“John Lewis Employees to Receive Pay Increase in April”

Around 65,000 employees at John Lewis are set to receive a substantial pay increase starting in April. The John Lewis Partnership, which includes department stores and Waitrose supermarkets, announced that shop floor wages will go up by nearly 7%, equivalent to £1,600 annually for a full-time worker. The company refers to its staff as partners since they collectively own the business.

While the pay rise news is confirmed, there is uncertainty regarding whether employees will receive a bonus this year, as none has been given since 2022. Jason Tarry, the chair of the partnership, expressed the commitment to providing a bonus at the earliest opportunity.

The decision on the bonus issuance will be made by the Board in March, separate from the pay rise announcement. Under the leadership of former Tesco executive Mr. Tarry and managing director Peter Ruis, the company has been striving to recover from significant losses in recent years.

John Lewis stated that 99.6% of partners will benefit from the pay increase, totaling £108 million. Effective April 1, employees on the shop floor at John Lewis and Waitrose will see a 6.9% raise, with minimum hourly rates increasing to £13.25 nationwide and £14.80 within the M25 area.

For partners acquiring advanced skills or taking on specialized roles, pay rates will rise to £14.31 per hour, reaching £15.98 within the M25. These adjustments partly align with the higher National Living Wage effective April, with a 4.1% increase to £12.71 per hour for workers aged 21 and above.

Helen Webb, the chief people officer at the John Lewis Partnership, emphasized the importance of investing in their workforce. The company’s focus is on enhancing partner pay continuously, reflecting their dedication to rewarding employees and securing the future of the partnership.

In addition to the salary increase, partners at the organization enjoy discounts at John Lewis and Waitrose, along with benefits such as up to a 12% pension contribution, discounted rates at affiliated hotels, financial support for personal development and leisure activities, subsidized meals, and a comprehensive health and well-being package, including options for physiotherapy and counseling referrals.

The partnership reported a significant loss of £88 million for the six months ending in July, attributing it to restructuring expenses and new tax regulations. Operating 36 department stores and over 300 Waitrose supermarkets, the group remains focused on navigating financial challenges and sustaining growth.
