“Fake AI Videos Spread Panic Amid Hurricane Melissa Crisis”

False AI-generated videos depicting the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa are circulating, falsely showing sharks swimming in the flooded streets of Jamaica.

Hurricane Melissa, categorized as a Category 5 storm, is currently battering Jamaica and is expected to result in significant destruction. This storm marks the most intense weather event to hit the island in the past 174 years. Jamaican authorities have taken all necessary precautions, leading to deserted streets in the capital city of Kingston.

Concern has been heightened on the island due to the spread of fake images, including AI-generated videos featuring sharks in flooded areas.

Numerous fabricated videos, some bearing OpenAI’s Sora watermark, have been circulating on social media, causing further alarm among the public.

Senator Dana Morris Dixon, the information minister of Jamaica, has been actively participating in briefings to provide accurate updates on the storm. Ms. Dixon, addressing the issue of fake content, urged the public to rely on official sources for information.

In addition to the fake shark footage, there have been other dramatic videos showing severe flooding and individuals fleeing from waves.

A meteorology professor from the University of Oklahoma has cautioned against the dangers posed by false images. Professor Amy McGovern emphasized the potential negative impact of misleading content, stating it could lead to loss of life and property amidst the impending catastrophic storm.

Hurricane Melissa, one of the most powerful hurricanes ever recorded, made landfall in southwestern Jamaica near New Hope and is predicted to exit around St. Ann parish in the north before moving towards Cuba.

Reports of landslides, fallen trees, and widespread power outages have been received ahead of Melissa’s arrival, with Jamaican officials warning of a slow recovery process and damage evaluation post-storm. Prime Minister Andrew Holness highlighted the lack of infrastructure capable of withstanding a Category 5 hurricane, emphasizing the challenge of swift recovery.
