“Baby P’s Mother Acknowledges Failures in Parole Hearing”

In a recent parole hearing, the mother of the tragic Baby P acknowledged that she had been inadequate in her role as a mother to her children, expressing remorse for not providing them with the care they deserved. Tracey Connelly was sentenced in 2009 for the tragic death of her 17-month-old son Peter in their residence in north London in August 2007, along with her then partner, Steven Barker, and his brother, Jason Owen.

During the parole hearing, Connelly, speaking off camera, admitted that she had a gut feeling that her son was being mistreated by Barker but chose to ignore it as she longed for a perfect relationship. When questioned about being a potential risk to children, Connelly admitted to being a risk to children under her care but not to children in general public spaces.

Reflecting on her past actions as a parent, Connelly confessed to being a poor mother who failed to shield her children, prioritizing her own needs over theirs. She acknowledged her shortcomings, stating that her children deserved better treatment than what she provided. Connelly, now in her 40s, informed the panel that she would refrain from engaging with individuals who have regular contact with children, emphasizing her reluctance to be around others’ children or grandchildren.

Baby P, who endured more than 50 injuries including a broken back and ribs, despite receiving numerous visits from social workers and health professionals, was a victim of severe neglect. Connelly attributed her inadequate mothering to emotional struggles and not being emotionally available to meet her children’s needs.

Connelly also disclosed that she resorted to physical discipline by slapping her children when they misbehaved, admitting that it was a coping mechanism when she felt overwhelmed. She expressed regret for perpetuating the cycle of abuse that she had experienced in her own childhood, acknowledging that her children suffered similar traumas due to her actions.

Having been released on license in 2013 but subsequently recalled for breaching parole conditions, Connelly was released for the second time in July 2022, only to be recalled again for entering a relationship without informing her supervising authorities. The parole hearing highlighted similarities between her past behavior and the recent incident, including her involvement in intimate relationships while in custody.

The chairwoman of the parole hearing panel emphasized the importance of transparency in relationships, stating that Connelly had the right to pursue relationships but must be forthcoming about them. The panel is considering various options, including releasing Connelly with a management plan or transferring her to an open prison, based on recommendations from her prison offender manager.
