Donald Trump and his supporters spent several days distorting the narrative around the victim of the Minneapolis shooting, portraying her as a “domestic terrorist.” However, recently released footage has cast doubt on this depiction.
Renee Nicole Good, a mother of three, had dropped off her six-year-old son at school before encountering a group of ICE agents. After being shot three times, she collided with a parked vehicle and tragically passed away on Wednesday. In the aftermath of the incident, Trump’s allies launched an offensive, alleging that the mother had “weaponized her vehicle.” JD Vance even labeled her death as a “tragedy of her own creation,” a sentiment echoing within Trump’s circle.
Despite efforts by the White House to justify the actions of the ICE agent involved in the shooting, his own body camera footage tells a different story. The video, which surfaced on Friday courtesy of online platform Alpha News, shows the agent circling Ms. Good’s vehicle while filming with his phone, capturing her face and license plate.
In the footage, Ms. Good can be seen calmly addressing the officer, stating, “That’s fine, dude. I’m not mad at you.” She then proceeds to move her car to make way for other vehicles as the immigration officers persist in questioning her.
The video reveals a stark contrast between Ms. Good’s composed demeanor and the aggressive behavior of the ICE agents, who demanded that she exit her vehicle forcefully. Subsequently, the bodycam footage clearly shows the mother turning her steering wheel away from the ICE agent, not towards him. The agent reacted with surprise before firing three fatal shots as Ms. Good’s vehicle veered out of control and crashed into a parked car.
In a final deplorable act, the agent, while the woman lay injured, was heard hurling derogatory insults at her. The released video contradicts the narrative propagated by Trump’s associates, who attempted to downplay Ms. Good’s death and the ensuing public outrage, particularly in a city still reeling from previous tragic events.
The world had previously witnessed the outpouring of anger following the murder of George Floyd by a white police officer in Minneapolis in 2020, underscoring the heightened sensitivity to such incidents. The recent shooting of Minnesota Lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband further compounded the city’s unrest.
Trump has a history of targeting progressive cities like Minneapolis with verbal attacks, but the newly surfaced video evidence now challenges his administration’s narrative. During a press conference, JD Vance continued to insist that Ms. Good had deliberately aimed at the ICE agent, while Vice President Pence echoed similar sentiments, attributing the tragedy to the woman’s actions and the broader political climate.
Ms. Good, an award-winning poet originally from Colorado Springs, was remembered by her loved ones as a compassionate and devout Christian. Her wife, Rebecca Good, paid a heartfelt tribute, describing her as a beacon of love, joy, and sunshine.
While authorities sought to shield the ICE agent involved, the officer’s own footage has provided conflicting evidence. Those close to Ms. Good emphasized her caring nature and strong family values, contrasting with the attempts by certain politicians to diminish her tragic death while promoting their own agendas.
