Elderly woman found dead on Australian island

An elderly woman, aged 80, was discovered deceased on a secluded island after failing to rejoin her cruise ship in Australia. The woman, who was on an excursion near the Great Barrier Reef off the Queensland coast, went missing while trekking. Her body was found on a mountain a day later following an alert from the ship’s staff. Authorities have stated that they are not treating her death as suspicious.

A comprehensive search operation, involving both sea and land efforts, was initiated before locating her body. She was part of a luxury voyage aboard the Coral Adventurer cruise ship and disappeared while exploring the area. The woman was participating in a 60-day trip around Australia, with the cost of such trips typically amounting to around $80,000 (£39,000).

Mark Fifield, the head of Coral Expeditions, confirmed the tragic incident involving the passenger on Lizard Island in an official statement. The company is cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigation. Following the crew’s notification of the missing woman, a search and rescue mission was conducted on both land and sea. Subsequently, Queensland Police informed Coral Expeditions of the woman’s discovery deceased on Lizard Island.

Fifield expressed deep regret over the incident and assured full support to the woman’s family. The company has been in contact with the family and will continue to provide assistance during this difficult period. Collaboration with Queensland Police and other relevant authorities is ongoing to aid in the investigation, with further comments withheld until the process concludes. Police have confirmed that a report for the coroner is being prepared.

According to a source cited by The Australian, the woman was hiking the challenging Cook’s Look trail on the island with a group when she required a break. Allegedly, the group proceeded without her. Robyn Holmes, the Cook Shire Mayor, offered condolences to the woman’s family, friends, and all affected by the tragedy. Appreciation was extended to emergency service personnel and agencies involved in the response efforts.
