The Ogun and Lagos State Governments issued a joint statement concerning the car accident involving Anthony Joshua in Nigeria. The former heavyweight champion sustained minor injuries in a fatal crash that resulted in the loss of two lives.
In their official communication, the Ogun and Lagos State Governments confirmed that Anthony Joshua, a British-Nigerian two-time unified world heavyweight boxing champion, was in a road traffic incident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The collision, involving a vehicle carrying a team of four, occurred when it hit a stationary truck, leading to the tragic fatalities.
Both governments expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for them to find strength during this challenging time. Anthony Joshua and another passenger were promptly taken to a specialized medical facility in Lagos where medical professionals confirmed their stable condition without the need for emergency interventions.
A dedicated medical team is overseeing the ongoing care of the individuals involved, with Anthony Joshua being conscious and in contact with his family. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the best medical assistance for those affected and have initiated investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Acknowledging public concern, the governments requested privacy for Anthony Joshua and his family. The statement was co-signed by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Media to the Governor of Ogun State, and Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information and Strategy for Lagos State.
During the incident, Joshua was traveling in a black Lexus Jeep that collided with a stationary lorry on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The Federal Road Safety Corps of Nigeria reported that the crash involved two vehicles, resulting in two fatalities, one injury, and two individuals escaping unharmed. Preliminary investigations suggest that the Lexus Jeep, suspected of speeding, lost control during an overtaking maneuver and collided with the parked truck.
