“Nightclub Rapist Sentenced: Spiked Drinks Lead to Assaults”

A disturbing video from security cameras revealed a rapist lurking in a Scottish nightclub, targeting victims just before drugging and sexually assaulting two women. Kenan Baki, aged 46, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for raping one woman and sexually assaulting another after spiking their drinks at Society nightclub in Kirkcaldy, Fife, on September 2, 2023. Prosecutors at the High Court in Edinburgh presented footage showing the perpetrator moving around the club, seemingly scanning tables for unattended drinks as he sought out vulnerable women.

Additional CCTV footage shown to the jury captured a woman collapsing in a chair at Baki’s nearby barber shop after he brought her there when she became ill from the drugs. She was observed conversing with him as he touched her hair and used a hairdryer on her face, pretending to style her hair. The victim then appeared to lose consciousness, her head falling back in the chair. Baki then carried the incapacitated woman to the back of the shop where he committed the rape, as reported by the Daily Record.

During the same evening, Baki drugged and sexually assaulted another woman after secretly adding a substance to her drink. Jurors watched CCTV footage of the woman becoming unwell, struggling to move and stay awake before collapsing. Concerned members of the public later intervened and separated the victim from Baki.

Baki received an 11-year extended sentence, including nine years in prison, at the High Court in Kilmarnock for his convictions of rape and sexual assault. He was also placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely, and a non-harassment order was issued for an indefinite period.

Fiona Kirkby, Procurator Fiscal for High Court Sexual Offences, stated: “Kenan Baki poses a significant danger to women through his sexually deviant and predatory behavior. The prosecution demonstrated that he targeted these two women, drugging them intentionally to exploit their vulnerability.”

“His accountability for these abhorrent actions should serve as a stern warning to those inclined to commit sexual offenses. I encourage individuals impacted by similar crimes to come forward when they are ready. Our staff, who are trained to handle trauma, will provide support as we strive to achieve justice using all available means.”

Between 2023 and 2024, 168 cases of drink spiking were reported to the police in Scotland. However, only nine of these cases were referred to the Crown Office, with the rest considered to lack sufficient evidence.

In Scotland, drink spiking is not a distinct criminal offense but is treated under drugging laws, where substances are administered without consent, or prosecuted under the Sexual Offences Act.
