Zenit St. Petersburg’s standout player, Andrei Mostovoy, bravely thwarted a kidnapping attempt outside a local store. The Russian footballer was ambushed by a group of assailants who tried to force him into a van just as he was leaving. Fortunately, Mostovoy managed to escape with the help of his friend, Alexander Grakun, a former youth hockey player.
The incident took place on Krestovsky Island in St. Petersburg on October 24. As Mostovoy was near his Mercedes G-Wagon, three masked individuals in a minibus made a sudden move to abduct him. However, their plans were foiled as Grakun intervened, pushing the attackers away, allowing Mostovoy to flee into a nearby wooded area. Following the ordeal, Mostovoy promptly reported the incident to the authorities.
Grakun’s mother, Natalya, praised her son’s quick thinking, stating that he incapacitated the kidnappers, causing them to retreat in shock. Mostovoy, in a subsequent video interview with Fontanka news outlet, expressed his disbelief at the harrowing experience and the impact it had on him.
Despite the traumatic event, Mostovoy returned to training and showcased his resilience by scoring a crucial goal for Zenit in a match against Dynamo Moscow, helping his team secure a 2-1 victory. Meanwhile, authorities swiftly acted on the case, leading to the apprehension of multiple suspects linked to the kidnapping attempt, including one who suggested the mastermind was not of Russian origin.
The individuals involved now face serious criminal charges, including kidnapping and robbery. The St. Petersburg Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the suspects are under custody, awaiting further legal proceedings, thanks to the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies.
