“UK’s DragonFire Laser System Destroys High-Speed Drones”

Britain has successfully tested its advanced DragonFire laser system by shooting down high-speed drones, enhancing the country’s defense capabilities. The laser, trialed at the MOD’s Hebrides range, effectively intercepted drones flying at speeds up to 650km/h, surpassing even the velocity of a Formula 1 car. This cutting-edge laser, reminiscent of Star Wars technology, boasts a remarkable accuracy, capable of hitting a £1 coin from a kilometer away at a cost of only £10 per shot.

Following these successful trials, a £316 million contract has been awarded to MBDA to supply new systems to the Royal Navy by 2027, five years earlier than initially planned for installation on a Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer. The DragonFire laser, part of the Strategic Defence Review (SDR), marks Europe’s first high-power laser system and represents a significant advancement in NATO’s directed energy weapons programs.

The deployment of the DragonFire laser is expected to create and sustain 590 jobs across the UK, with 200 positions in Scotland, 185 in the South West of England, and 75 in the East of England, aligning with the Government’s Plan for Change. Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, Luke Pollard MP, emphasized the strategic importance of this innovation in enhancing the UK’s defensive capabilities and supporting allies within NATO.

Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander highlighted the critical role of Scottish expertise in national security, underscoring Scotland’s reputation as a hub of defense excellence. The contract award and successful drone interceptions underscore the value of Scottish contributions to the UK’s defense sector, demonstrating the sector’s growth potential and the creation of skilled jobs for the workforce.
