“Survey Finds Brits Struggle with Cluttered Homes and Underused Lofts”

A recent survey revealed that 30% of Brits feel their homes lack sufficient space for their belongings. The study of 2,000 adults also showed that 44% are surrounded by clutter, causing stress, with 26% feeling too embarrassed to entertain guests due to the chaotic state of their homes.

The average person has two rooms in their house repurposed for storage, in addition to one dedicated storage area. The most common items cluttering homes include clothes overflowing from wardrobes, piles of paperwork, and unused travel bags. Despite 90% of respondents having loft space, they only access it about six times a year, with 6% never venturing into this area.

Interestingly, 41% of individuals were not shown the loft space when viewing properties, and only 31% confirmed its inclusion in the floor plans. Loftzone is advocating for change by urging estate agents to showcase usable lofts in listings and collaborate with developers to incorporate raised boarding systems into new homes, offering buyers accessible loft spaces. Dave Raval, the CEO of LoftZone, emphasized the value of maximizing loft areas for storage and energy efficiency.

Many people only utilize their lofts during the holiday season, primarily for retrieving and storing Christmas decorations. Reasons for underutilizing loft spaces year-round include concerns about dust, inaccessibility, and fears of pests like spiders and insects. Enhancing loft functionality could add an estimated £8,326 to property values, with potential influences on house purchase decisions.

Improving loft insulation and adding raised boarding can transform lofts into practical, energy-saving spaces, providing additional storage and preventing heat loss. Neglecting loft spaces in the housing market is akin to disregarding valuable potential living areas, potentially adding significant value to properties.
