Single mother celebrates son’s first Christmas amid cancer battle

A mother is celebrating her first Christmas as a single parent with her child conceived through a sperm donor, affirming that her baby doesn’t require a father. Emily Hausman, aged 43, is determined to create a magical Christmas experience for her son, Ezekiel, born seven months ago through IVF using an anonymous sperm donor.

Despite facing the challenging diagnosis of stage four metastatic melanoma cancer shortly after Ezekiel’s birth, Emily remains optimistic about the upcoming festive season. The Utah-based mother has undergone two rounds of immunotherapy, expressing her fear of confronting mortality directly.

Expressing her excitement, Emily shared, “I truly adore Christmas and am thrilled to celebrate it with my baby. His joy at the lights and music makes everything so special this holiday season.” She emphasized the abundance of love surrounding Ezekiel, making the holidays exceptionally meaningful this year.

Reflecting on her decision to embark on single motherhood, Emily highlighted that it wasn’t about giving up on the idea of a family or a future partner but rather about not compromising on her values and aspirations. She faced multiple challenges during her pregnancy, including health issues and job loss, but remained resilient in ensuring her baby’s well-being.

Despite health setbacks post-pregnancy, including a blood clot and infections, Emily persevered. Her cancer diagnosis in June added another layer of hardship, coinciding with the end of her unemployment benefits. However, with ongoing treatment and the support of a GoFundMe campaign that has garnered significant contributions, Emily remains determined to overcome these obstacles.

By sharing her journey, Emily aims to inspire others to persevere through adversity. She is committed to making Ezekiel’s first Christmas a memorable one, underscoring the importance of cherishing the present moment. Despite facing mortality, Emily finds strength in her son and encourages others to embrace life’s challenges with courage and gratitude.
