Anthony Joshua has made a comeback to the boxing gym nearly three weeks after being involved in a fatal car accident in Nigeria. The former two-time heavyweight world champion was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that crashed into a stationary truck on a major expressway near Lagos, resulting in the tragic deaths of two of his close friends and teammates, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. The funerals of the deceased took place in London on January 4.
Following the accident, Joshua, who had recently defeated YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, spent several days receiving hospital treatment before being discharged on New Year’s Eve. Speculation arose about his future in the sport, but the British boxer has now shared images on Snapchat showing him back in the gym engaging in what he called “mental strength therapy.” The photos depict him working out, hitting pads, performing lower leg exercises, and using a stationary bike. Additional footage captured him in a pool as part of his training.
Despite reports from Joshua’s uncle claiming the boxer had decided to retire post-accident, Mirror Fighting understands that Joshua has not yet made a definitive decision on his future in boxing. Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged over the crash with offenses including causing death by dangerous driving and driving without a valid license.
Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, emphasized that there are currently no discussions regarding Joshua’s boxing future and expects the boxer to take time away to recover emotionally and mentally before making any decisions. Hearn stressed that the final say on Joshua’s boxing career rests with Joshua himself and that the boxer needs time to heal before contemplating his next steps in the sport.
