“TUC Criticizes Liberal Democrats for Blocking Sick Pay Bill”

The Liberal Democrats have come under fire for allegedly obstructing a significant bill aimed at providing sick pay benefits to seven million workers. Paul Nowak, the head of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), is poised to criticize the Liberal Democrats, led by Sir Ed Davey, for delaying the progress of Labour’s Employment Rights Bill in the House of Lords, contradicting their own election promises.

During an address at the Co-operative Party conference, Mr. Nowak will condemn both the Liberal Democrats and the Conservative Party for causing delays in crucial legislation. He will emphasize that the legislation, which includes reforms benefiting millions of individuals, is being stalled by the actions of Liberal Democrat and Tory Peers.

Mr. Nowak is expected to stress the importance of supporting the Bill, which would grant seven million workers day one sick pay from next April. He will highlight the responsibility of the Peers to honor government commitments and not obstruct manifesto promises, appealing to them to prioritize the interests of voters across party lines.

Upon receiving Royal Assent, the bill will introduce various new rights, including flexible working arrangements, protection against sexual harassment, an end to the practice of fire rehiring, the repeal of anti-union laws, and a prohibition on zero-hour contracts. Additionally, the bill will grant unions enhanced access to workplaces, recognition, and representation rights.

According to the TUC, there are over one million individuals in the UK on zero-hour contracts, with many more in unstable employment. Recent research has shown that 4 million people in the UK are engaged in insecure work, indicating a pervasive issue detrimental to both workers and the economy. The TUC categorizes insecure work as encompassing zero-hours contracts, agency, casual, and seasonal employment, excluding fixed-term contracts and low-paid self-employed workers lacking essential rights and protections.

The prevalence of insecure work escalated significantly under the Conservative government, with an 800,000 increase from 2011 to 2024. The Liberal Democrats have refrained from providing any comment on the matter.
