UK Citizen Arrested in Ukraine for Espionage and Terrorism

A man from the UK has been arrested in Ukraine on suspicion of espionage for Russia and planning acts of terrorism. According to Kyiv prosecutors, the individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, allegedly shared classified information with Russian intelligence while serving as a military instructor. It is claimed that he gathered intelligence on installations in Odesa, attempted to access military bases, and discussed the use of explosive devices, for which he was reportedly paid £5,148.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) stated that the detainee was making preparations for terrorist activities. The SBU added that he received instructions from Russian operatives on constructing an improvised explosive device and was given the location of a weapons stash, from which he purportedly acquired a pistol and two loaded magazines.

Reportedly, the man arrived in Ukraine in January 2024 and conducted training sessions for military personnel in Mykolaiv before relocating to Odesa in September. Prosecutors alleged that he engaged with a contact linked to Russian intelligence and agreed to sell military secrets.

Evidence presented by prosecutors includes the man sharing the whereabouts of Ukrainian military units, images of training grounds, and personal information of military staff in May. The SBU highlighted his proficiency in firearms and tactical training, noting his recruitment efforts on pro-Kremlin online platforms.

The individual was apprehended at his temporary dwelling in Kyiv and has been remanded in custody without bail pending further investigation. Ukrainian security services indicated that he could potentially face a prison sentence of up to 12 years.

The UK Foreign Office acknowledged the situation and affirmed ongoing cooperation with Ukrainian authorities. This incident appears to mark the first publicized instance of a British citizen facing espionage charges in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, authorities in London detained three men aged 44, 45, and 48 on suspicion of aiding Russia’s foreign intelligence service. The Metropolitan Police disclosed that the individuals were arrested by Counter Terrorism Policing at various locations in London and are currently being held under the National Security Act.

Commander Dominic Murphy of Counter Terrorism Policing London emphasized the increasing recruitment of individuals as ‘proxies’ by foreign intelligence agencies. He warned against involvement in criminal activities on behalf of foreign states in the UK, underscoring the serious legal repercussions for those found guilty.
