The Gaza ceasefire, eagerly anticipated, has crumbled as the Israeli Prime Minister instructed his forces to carry out “intense strikes” on the Palestinian territory. This action came after the Israeli PM accused Hamas of breaching the peace agreement, while Hamas retaliated by alleging that Israel had violated the ceasefire 125 times.
Israel has reported that a coffin delivered by Hamas on Monday did not contain the body of a previously captured individual that was expected. The supposed two-week ceasefire has now concluded with a surge of violence and significant military strikes being initiated.
According to Gaza officials, since the ceasefire began on October 10, Israel has caused the deaths of 94 Palestinians within the Gaza Strip. In response, Hamas accused Israel of trying to create false justifications to justify further aggressive actions in Gaza.
Hamas has claimed that Israel is impeding efforts to locate bodies within the Strip and has urged mediators to allow humanitarian tasks to proceed without political interference. Tonight, anxious Palestinians throughout the Strip are preparing for potential renewed attacks by Israel.
Earlier on Tuesday, there were reports of intense gunfire and explosions in Rafah, southern Gaza. Israel accused Hamas of misidentifying the remains of a recently returned captive, which were actually of an individual abducted and recovered two years ago.
Israel’s conflict with Gaza has resulted in the deaths of at least 68,527 individuals and the injury of 170,395 since it commenced in October 2023. During the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, 1,200 individuals were killed in Israel, and around 200 were taken captive.
The October 7 attacks triggered multiple additional fronts of conflict for Israel, including engagements with Lebanese Hezbollah, Yemeni Houthis, pro-Iranian Iraqi militia, and Syrian factions. Furthermore, earlier this year, the US and Israel conducted strikes on Iran, targeting its nuclear facilities.
Many of Israel’s adversaries, who are proxies of Iran, now find themselves in ruins, potentially requiring years to regroup. The Iranian regime’s supporters have also significantly weakened due to prolonged conflicts with Israel, resulting in significant losses for Hamas in Gaza.
Critics have accused Netanyahu of deliberately provoking actions that threaten the ceasefire agreement. Muhammad Shehada, an analyst with the European Council on Foreign Relations, asserted that Netanyahu has been using various tactics to undermine the ceasefire and resume hostilities in Gaza.
Both sides have alleged violations of the ceasefire agreement, necessitating significant diplomatic efforts to mend the fractured peace deal. It is reported that US President Donald Trump is closely monitoring the extent of Israeli military actions against Gaza.
