“Belgium GP Sentenced for Assaulting Boy with Down’s Syndrome”

A 74-year-old man in Belgium has been sentenced to five years in prison for sexually assaulting a young boy with Down’s syndrome. The retired GP, who practiced in Liège, received this sentence at the Liège Court of Appeal, with one-third of the term suspended. The abuse occurred in March and May 2021, with the child disclosing that he was assaulted twice by the perpetrator, who maintained a friendship with the boy’s father and continued to see patients post-retirement.

One incident was reported to have taken place during a shared shower at the doctor’s residence following a sports activity, while the details of the other assault were less clear. Although the defendant denied the accusations, inconsistencies arose in his explanations for being in the shower with the child. Physical signs of abuse were corroborated by a medical examination, and a psychological evaluation characterized the ex-GP as having a narcissistic personality.

In a prior trial in September, the man was initially given a five-year sentence, with the prosecution advocating for a longer prison term due to the victim’s vulnerability. Meanwhile, the ex-doctor’s legal team sought an acquittal or a suspended sentence. This case emerges amidst a distressing revelation in France involving a paedophile surgeon, Joel Le Scouarnec, who was found guilty of sexually exploiting numerous individuals, primarily underage patients, over an extended period.

Le Scouarnec admitted to committing numerous sexual offenses, resulting in a 20-year prison sentence. His despicable actions were unraveled through electronic diaries chronicling decades of abuse on young patients in medical facilities across western France. The victims, comprising both genders with an average age of 11, were subject to severe mistreatment facilitated by his status as a respected medical professional. The perpetrator maintained a detailed record of his heinous acts, even expressing pride in his deviant behavior annually on his birthday.

This disturbing case underscores the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals from such reprehensible acts and upholding the integrity of the medical profession.
