Labour’s head of policing has expressed interest in exploring the idea of rounding the tips of knives to prevent fatal stabbings, a suggestion put forth by actor Idris Elba. Sarah Jones, speaking to The Mirror, finds the concept of blunting kitchen knives intriguing, citing evidence that indicates it could have a significant impact.
Jones also noted that knife arches in schools could be a valuable tool, though she emphasized that the decision to implement them rests with school leaders. Following the tragic death of Harvey Willgoose, his parents have advocated for the installation of arches in all secondary schools and colleges.
The Government’s efforts to reduce knife crime have shown progress, with a recent decline in reported cases. Campaigners, including Idris Elba, have advocated for the adoption of rounded kitchen knives. Jones expressed a willingness to engage with manufacturers on this proposal, among other measures being considered.
While focusing on empowering law enforcement, Jones acknowledged the importance of exploring various strategies. She highlighted the potential benefits of using knife arches, especially when combined with plainclothes policing, to identify individuals potentially carrying knives.
In response to calls for wider deployment of knife arches, a Home Office minister supported their use as a useful tool, particularly in school environments. Concerns about knife crime persist among parents and schools, especially following recent incidents like the tragic death of Harvey.
Despite some progress in combating knife-related offenses, Jones stressed the ongoing need for concerted efforts to address the issue. Collaborative initiatives across government departments aim to prevent youth involvement in violence, particularly after cuts to youth services in previous years.
Jones emphasized the importance of coordinating services effectively to make a meaningful impact, highlighting the role of various stakeholders in supporting young people and creating safer communities. The fight against knife crime remains a priority, with a long-term goal of halving incidents within a decade.
