The UK’s defence chief has issued a warning, stating that threats to the country are increasing in seriousness. This caution comes after RAF pilots were targeted with lasers from a Russian spy ship. Defence Secretary John Healey, in an interview with The Mirror, emphasized that Vladimir Putin is escalating aggression and emphasized the need for the public to acknowledge a heightened level of danger. He disclosed that the Navy and Air Force had been mobilized to confront the Kremlin’s spy vessel, the Yantar, which recently entered UK waters.
Confirming that British aircraft had been exposed to lasers, which he described as extremely hazardous, Healey sent a direct message to the Russian leader, stating, “We see you.” He further stated that the military would take action if the ship altered its course, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the UK and Moscow. The Yantar, a vessel designed for surveillance during peacetime and sabotage during conflicts, was spotted near Scottish waters.
According to a Ministry of Defence (MOD) source, the Yantar crossed into UK waters between November 5 and 11. Healey highlighted the increasing aggression from Russia, especially in light of recent events in Ukraine. He stressed the necessity for the public to acknowledge the evolving threats and the government’s commitment to a substantial rise in defence expenditure.
In a previous incident in January, a Royal Navy nuclear-powered submarine warned off the Yantar after it was found near undersea cables. When asked about the significance of the recent incursion, the Defence Secretary emphasized that it underscores the growing threat posed by Russia. He stated that the UK is well aware of the ship’s capabilities and activities, indicating preparedness to respond if necessary.
Healey pointed out that past actions have demonstrated the UK’s vigilant monitoring of the Yantar. He disclosed that a nuclear-powered attack submarine had surfaced near the vessel in a previous encounter. The Defence Secretary reiterated the UK’s readiness for any potential escalation should the Yantar change its course.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper attributed Moscow’s increased aggression to failures in Ukraine, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and a firm response. The Polish government recently accused Russia of orchestrating an explosion near a crucial railway line, leading to the closure of the last remaining Russian consulate in the country. Cooper expressed support for Poland’s investigation into the sabotage incident.
The Dutch navy recently escorted the Yantar out of the North Sea, underscoring international concerns regarding the vessel’s activities. The UK government’s stance on Russian interference remains firm, although specific diplomatic discussions with Russia have not been disclosed.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to prioritize national defense in the upcoming Budget. Healey praised Labour’s commitment to defense spending, contrasting it with other political parties’ stances. Labour’s proactive approach to strengthening national security was highlighted as essential in the face of evolving threats.
